Answering Your Most Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implant Care
Can I smoke after getting a dental implant?
It’s not recommended to smoke after getting a dental implant. Smoking can decrease the chances of implant success and increase the risk of implant failure. It can also delay healing, increase your risk of infection, and cause complications such as peri-implantitis, (inflammation of the tissue surrounding the implant).
Smoking can decrease the blood supply to the implant site, which can slow down the healing process and make it more difficult for the implant to fuse with the jawbone. Additionally, smoking can also cause a decrease in bone density, making it harder for the implant to secure properly in the jaw.
How will I know if my implant is infected?
Several symptoms may indicate a dental implant infection. Some common signs include:
- Pain or discomfort around the implant site
- Swelling or redness in the area
- Warmth or tenderness to the touch
- Drainage or pus coming from the implant site
- A foul taste or odor coming from the implant site
- A fever or an overall feeling of being unwell
- Difficulty biting or chewing
- Loss of implant stability or mobility
If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your dentist as soon as possible. They’ll diagnose the problem and recommend the appropriate treatment. Remember to maintain good oral hygiene and follow your dentist’s instructions for implant care to prevent infection.
How often should I visit the dentist for checkups after my implant surgery?
After dental implant surgery, make sure to schedule regular check-ups with your dentist to ensure the implant is properly healing. The frequency of these check-ups will depend on the individual case and the type of implant procedure.
It’s generally recommended to have a follow-up visit with your dentist within the first week after surgery to check on the healing process. After that, your dentist will schedule additional visits based on your progress generally every 2 to 4 weeks for the first few months post-surgery. Once the implant treatment is complete, you’ll likely return to your regular schedule of visits every six months or as advised by your dentist.
How do I care for my dental implants?
Dental implants are meant to function like natural teeth, so it’s important to take care of them in the same way. This includes brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste, flossing daily, and using an antiseptic mouthwash to help kill bacteria.
You should also see your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings to ensure the longevity of your dental implants. In addition, avoid biting on hard objects and smoking as it can cause implant failure.
How long does it take to fully recover from dental implant surgery?
Recovery time can vary depending on the individual and the type of implant surgery. Generally, it can take several weeks to several months for the implant to fully integrate with the jawbone. During this time, you may experience swelling, discomfort, and tenderness around the implant site. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication to help manage any discomfort.
It’s important to follow the post-operative instructions provided by your dentist to ensure proper healing. After the implant has integrated with the jawbone, a restoration will be placed on top of the implant to complete the process. This additional step can take several more weeks to complete.
Can I exercise after dental implant surgery?
Exercise is generally discouraged for the first few days after implant surgery as it can cause increased blood flow to the area, slowing down the healing process. It’s best to avoid strenuous exercise for at least the first week after surgery and consult with your oral surgeon before resuming any exercise regimen.

Reviews
The dentists are absolutely excellent…
“I have been going here for years. The dentists are absolutely excellent and they always have an appointment available that fits into a busy schedule. I also completed invisilgn and my teeth are perfectly straight now. They also practice preventive medicine and just went in for my 6 month cleaning. Every time feel like I have a new set of choppers and best yet the check up noted no cavities!.”
